We got some R&R at the Met Council on Housing Queens Chapter Picnic. A well deserved award after enduring months of hearings with The Mayors Rental Guidelines Board.

The nine member board, have been diagnosed with being deaf; listening but not hearing stories from tenants who have been suffering from slipping rent payments and inhabitable conditions in their units. The Plea for A Rent Freeze is nothing but an evaporated drop in the gulf of problems gone unmet and unresolved with more complexities thank solutions.

However, today was a day for celebrations, continued networking, cooperation, representation and acknowledgment of members from their respected parts, in the Borough of Queens.

It’s speculated that Mayor hopeful Zohran Mandani will work to correct housing issues with his socialist idealism; ensuring everyone gets their hand in, in helping correct the present housing nodus.
In the meantime, the council will be attending a number of hearings on housing court this summer that all are welcomed to come and support.

The Rental Guidelines Board made its decision July 1st, not to freeze the rent but make increases at 4.5% for up to 2 year lease terms and 3.5% for 1 year leases. As per our attendance at the first hearing, The Board didn’t seem moved or affected by the numerous accounts given by tenants in response to conditions, the cost of living, landlord treatments, and affordability for city workers. Problems that The City has yet to make in supporting and administering significant change to since its preliminary intervention during the Koch Era.
The Queens Chapter remains dedicated to organizing and continuing in the fight and support for rent stabilization offering support in legal for tenants within The City.
